Thank you for your interest in The University of Texas at Austin Butler School of Music. Applying to UT Austin as a music major is a two-part process. In addition to completing the online Texas Common Application, an additional application and audition are required of all prospective music majors. In order to be seriously considered for admission to the Butler School of Music, you should list Music as your first college/major choice.
You can find the Butler School of Music application, audition requirements, and audition dates on this website (links to the right). If you have questions regarding any part of the application or audition process and can't find the answer on our website, please contact Sarah Borshard, Admissions Counselor II.
UT EVENTS
Each year the UT Office of Admissions hosts a variety of campus events just for prospective and incoming students and their families. Taking part in campus events offers you the opportunity to see what the campus is really like, interact with other prospective students, and receive information directly from the staff members and admissions counselors who are trained to help prospective students find answers to the questions that always cause the most trouble.
Events include those designed to offer prospective freshmen a preview of the campus like Explore UT (March), Longhorn Saturday (various dates), and Discover UT (October). Transfer to Texas (December) is a special event for prospective transfer students and students currently enrolled in the Coordinated Admission Program.
Campus Visits
Freshman applicants can schedule a personalized campus visit online. You can select from a variety of visit-related activities, including admissions information sessions held in the Undergraduate Admissions Center (UAC), campus tours, and a College of Fine Arts Information Session and Tour. The Fine Arts Session is offered on Mondays and Fridays at 2pm.
Prospective transfer students can visit campus for information sessions (held each Friday), meet with an admissions counselor, tour the campus, and schedule a College of Fine Arts Information Session and Tour. The Fine Arts Session is offered on Mondays and Fridays at 2pm.

Sessions conclude with a walking tour of performance spaces in the Winship Drama Building and Butler School of Music. Offered Mondays and Fridays at 2pm.
Sarah Borshard, Admissions Counselor II, is happy to meet individually with prospective freshmen and transfer applicants who are interested in majoring in music at the Butler School of Music during normal business hours (Monday-Friday, 9am-12pm and 1pm-4pm). To request an appointment, contact Ms. Borshard directly at uga@mail.music.utexas.edu at least a week in advance. Please note that as described on the Transfer Admission page, Ms. Borshard does not evaluate transcripts.
Ms. Borshard is not available the month of July.
If you would like to visit with a member of the Butler School of Music Faculty, please email them directly to request an appointment.
FUTURE UT NON-MUSIC MAJORS
All Butler School of Music ensembles are open to any currently enrolled UT student who can pass the ensemble audition. Please visit the ensembles webpage or contact the Orchestra/Choir Office or Band Office directly for ensemble audition dates and requirements. Further information on music courses and lessons available to non-music majors is also available on our website.
The Butler School of Music, like most other units of The University of Texas at Austin, does not offer any self-contained minors. If your degree plan includes a minor, then you may use music as a minor. You must meet with an advisor in your own college to plan your minor. Please visit the Music Minor webpage for more information.
Ms. Borshard is only available to meet with prospective music majors.
SHADOW DAYS
You might consider scheduling a Shadow Day during the Fall semester of your senior year (September - November). This would allow you to spend a day attending classes with a current BSoM student and meeting some of the staff and faculty who would be guiding you through your undergraduate studies. We are no longer accepting requests for Fall 2011. Requests for Fall 2012 will be accepted beginning September 1, 2012.
